Roberta Romano

Biography

Roberta Romano is a PhD student in Artificial Intelligence for Society at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa. She earned her Law degree from the University of Trento and has been admitted to the Bar at the Court of Appeal of Milan. She has worked for one year as a research fellow at Sant’Anna School, contributing to the PRIN project "CURA" (Children as Vulnerable Users of IoT and AI-based Technologies: A Multi-level Interdisciplinary Assessment). Her doctoral research focuses on the protection of minors, specifically exploring the digital identity of children and adolescents through AI-based age assurance systems.

From Risk to Protection: Vulnerability as a Benchmark for European AI Governance

The advent of AI, particularly generative AI, raises numerous concerns regarding the protection of individuals most exposed to the risks arising from the pervasive use of new technologies across various aspects of daily life. The EU legislator has acknowledged these challenges, consequently mandating respect for the category of so-called "vulnerable" subjects. The discussion aims to address the concept of vulnerability in light of the AI Act, envisaging a governance model in which the protection of fragility becomes the fundamental benchmark for the very legitimacy of technological innovation.
